Doug discusses the inspiration behind the Summer Wheatfields collection:

The Summer Wheatfields collection was originally inspired by the ripening crops near where we live. It was July, I was looking for something atypical of the summer. I toyed with the idea of beaches (which may yet come) and other forms of field colour (including lavender), but it was the wheat field idea that really worked for me.

The original paintings were made on heavy duty paper using acrylic paint spread with a palette knife. I liked the way the paint spread smoothly under the knife, so I deliberately avoided re-touching any small mistakes.

The paintings were treated using software to reduce them to nine colours - three shades each of blue, yellow and green. In theory this shouldn’t have taken that long, in reality it proved much harder than planned. I am hoping it will next time around!

It took several attempts to get to the set of designs eventually used, and I will spare you the ones which were discarded. I have included below photos below of the original four paintings.

The 'Swirly' collection originated from a discussion over lunch with Jilly Stewart, the originating artist.
